Knotweed and the Law

What the Law Says in Ireland

Japanese Knotweed is listed under the European Communities (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011 (S.I. No. 477/2011).

It is an offence to plant, cause to grow, or allow it to spread without a licence.

The Wildlife Act 1976 (as amended) also makes it illegal to cause invasive species to grow in the wild.

Having Knotweed on your land is not illegal, but allowing it to spread or moving contaminated soil can lead to prosecution and fines.

📍 For Landowners in Cork and Surrounding Areas

If Knotweed spreads from your property, you could be legally liable.

Improper disposal of infested soil or plant waste is also an offence.

Surveyors and lenders may require a Knotweed Management Plan before property sales or mortgage approval.

Using Cork Japanese Knotweed ensures your property is managed legally, safely, and in full compliance with Irish regulations.
